NFL Spine Injury Roundup: Week 4

Now that the Week 4 games are over, let’s look at where teams stand with injuries, as well as some updates on players that were injured last week.

Detroit Lions – Joique Bell (Running Back) – It is suspected that Bell suffered a concussion during the Lions’ game against the New York Jets on Sunday. However, the team will not confirm the injury and has a policy of not discussing player injuries. We do know that he was not allowed to speak to reporters, which is NFL protocol for a player who has suffered from a concussion.

New Orleans Saints – Terron Armstead (Left Tackle) – Armstead was taken out of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys to be evaluated for a concussion. He did not return to the game. At this time, there is no word on when he is expected to return.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Dwayne Gratz (Cornerback) – Gratz sustained a concussion Sunday during the game against the San Diego Chargers after landing on his head while making a tackle. He was evaluated for a concussion under NFL protocol and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

Dallas Cowboys – Terrell McClain (Defensive Tackle) – McClain had previously suffered from a concussion, and while he was cleared to practice, he was listed as questionable and did not play in Sunday’s game.

Chicago Bears – Jeremiah Ratliff (Defensive Tackle) – Ratliff, who suffered from a concussion during the Week 2 game and has been out since, was ruled out again for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Buffalo Bills – Marquise Goodwin (Wide Receiver) – Goodwin did not play in Sunday’s game due to an injury that was later confirmed to be a concussion.

Oakland Raiders – Nick Roach (Linebacker) – After sustaining a concussion during the preseason, Roach has yet to play in a regular season game, and he was once again listed as inactive for this weekend’s game. This is particularly concerning, as Roach has been out for five weeks following the injury.

Back Injuries

San Francisco 49ers – Vernon Davis (Tight End) – expected to play Week 5; had prior ankle injury; During Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Davis was hit in the back and appeared to be in pain. He went for an evaluation in the locker room and didn’t return to the game. He complained of back spasms, but an X-ray was negative, so he is expected to play in the Week 5 game.

Atlanta Falcons – Justin Blalock (Left Guard) – Blalock left Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings with a lower back injury and did not return. He was scheduled for an MRI Monday, but so far, no further information has been reported.

New York Giants – James Brewer (Offensive Lineman) – Brewer continues to be listed as inactive with a back injury and has still yet to play a game during the regular season.

Carolina Panthers – Garry Williams (Offensive Lineman) – Williams has been placed on injured reserve following a back injury.

Miami Dolphins – Randy Starks (Defensive Tackle) – Starks did not participate in practice and did not play in the game over the weekend due to a back injury. This is the first game Starks has missed since joining the Dolphins in 2008.

San Diego Chargers – Richard Ohrnberger (Center) – Ohrnberger was listed as inactive due to a back injury and did not play in Sunday’s game. No further information has been given about his condition.

Neck Injuries

Detroit Lions – James Ihedigbo (Safety) – After suffering a neck injury during the preseason, Ihedigbo was cleared to play last week and made his season debut this weekend with no problems.
