Running On The Beach Is Good Exercise
JUNO BEACH, Fl — Recent studies say it may just be the “best” place to get a walk or jog.
CBS12’s Craig Gold got a local doctor’s opinion on these findings and tells us exactly “how” the beach puts your body to the test. Some of the studies found digging your feet into the sand might just be the ultimate cardio and then some.
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Gleiber says he recommends a stroll in the sand to several of his patients, “I recommend it to folks who have arthritis or perhaps injuries either in the spine or in the hips or in the knees or ankles because it’s a softer surface.” The “softer surface” is what makes it a relatively safer, yet more “effective” workout.
When your feet sink into the sand, in order to take those next few steps, you use muscles you normally wouldn’t. Meanwhile you’re expending 1 and a half to 2 times the energy you would on a sidewalk or treadmill. But Dr. Gleiber cautions not everyone should take their workout to the sun and sand. People with heart conditions, a history of skin cancer and those who have bad feet that tend to “pronate.” That “pronating” could lead to injury.
Experts say that when you’re first starting a beach-running regiment, start out by the water’s edge where the sand is harder. Then, gradually work to the softer sand for a more intense workout.
